Hunting Season

There are 42 days until graduation.

I have 15 days of class left.

It is officially job hunting season.

  1. 1.       Clean up your resume and filter it for a specific job.

Look at the job description and know where your previous experience fits into the position. The job description’s keywords should be mirrored in your resume. Many companies have an online application process and often scan resumes with software that seeks keywords. It’s also a great idea to keep a journal of what you are doing day-to-day, so you can showcase things when a job description or interview requires it.

  1. 2.       Network in the industry.

If you enjoy social media, then joining Social Media Club would be a great idea. If you want to network with PR professionals and students, then get involved with your college’s PRSSA chapter. Networking can open the door to job opportunities and it always helps to know someone where you are applying to work. Get to know people and keep in contact with them on LinkedIn or through email.

  1. 3.       Tap your connections.

I think too many people view the job hunt like a competition and often avoid mentioning their interviews and applications to people who work on the inside. Swallow your pride. Tap your resources. Some places still hire based on who you know and how you know them, so keep that in mind.

  1. 4.       Write thank you cards for interviews.

I was raised on thank you cards. They are a powerful tool, so use them. Make your message memorable and try to make each card custom to the recipient. “Thanks for the interview,” is not enough. People want to be remembered. Try something like, “Thank you for taking the time to consider me for the media relations position.” Be specific and include a statement about something unique to the conversation you had with the interviewer.

I like to think of the job hunt as personal brand management. How do you manage your personal brand? What are your tips for job hunting?
